More surprising was the second trailer for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes shown earlier this month, which introduced plenty of returning and new characters. More specifically, the fact that Three Houses protagonist Byleth wouldn’t be a playable character, choosing to remain a mercenary instead of becoming a professor. This seemingly puts Byleth in a new antagonist role, with a new player character known as “Shez” taking up the reigns as protagonist. With this new player character comes a new dynamic with the three house leaders of the game, as players will be forced to choose one of the three houses to side with.

While this is in-line with Fire Emblem: Three Houses having the player choose between the student houses, this perspective is altered significantly with Shez. Instead of the player joining the house as its professor, they are joining the house as a fellow student, with this choice being made at the start of the game. This also affects Three Hopes’ story, with each branch leading to big divides in the plot as they follow the perspectives of either the Adrestian Empire, Kingdom of Faerghus, or Leicester Alliance.

Unlike Three Houses which had the first half of the game mostly the same as they teach the students, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes will likely be very different as they forge relationships with the house-specific classmates in this spin-off. With these drastically different perspectives, it’s likely players won’t be able to recruit other classmates from other houses to their side, though this is only speculation for now.

The Twitter account also revealed that not only that player character Shez will be able to select between male or female appearance, but the same options will be given to Byleth as well. These details have gotten the fandom speculating about the many branches the story could take, as well as the implications of Byleth’s new potentially antagonistic role.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes launches for Nintendo Switch on June 24.
