12 Jeritza: Just So Deathly Boring
First and foremost is Jeritza, mostly because there’s not much to say. He’s there, he’s aloof and sort of confrontational, and he’s got a dark past. We’re not going to get into spoilers but there is more to Jeritza than what meets the eye, and yeah while it is pretty cool, he’s still boring as a person. His actions and his background are interesting, but he as a character is not. Plus no support rank, which makes it hard to even catch a glimpse into his personality. Even the other characters like him with no support dialogue have more interesting designs, personalities, and aspects.
11 Seteth: Boring Brother But Deadly On A Dragon
Next is Seteth, a character we’re sure isn’t high on ANYONE’s list. He’s just a busybody and one that is constantly on Byleths case from day one. Sure, over time he gets better and stops being so confrontational. But, even after he calms down, Seteth is still an overprotective brother with no personality of his own. But, on the other hand, he’s a GREAT unit on the battlefield. Surprisingly this mild-mannered zealot is a Wyvern Rider by default and dominates on the field with an odd passive that causes female units to do more damage around him. Not awful, just doesn’t get much of a chance to shine.

10 Rhea: Archbishop Has Her Image To Keep
Next is Rhea, the “principal” or Archbishop of Garreg Mach Monastery. Rhea has an interesting first impression with the intro cutscene for Three Houses showing her dominate against the previous holder of the Sword of the Creator. It’s an intense battle but it really takes a turn when Rhea pins her opponent and stabs him twice in the chest. Then, the rest of the time we see her during our stay at the Monastery, she’s exceedingly polite. Overall Rhea is there as a symbol and she knows it, meaning she can’t reveal too much of herself. As the story goes on there’s more to her, but it’s still much less than most other characters.
9 Gilbert: The Bog Standard Knight
Gilbert’s fine. Honestly, if we could leave his description as just “he’s fine” we would, but that’d be unfair. Gilbert pops into the story just a few missions in, seemingly out of nowhere (unless the player picked the Blue Lion class). And, once he’s at the monastery, he just kind of never leaves? Obviously, Gilbert has some connection to a student at the school (psst it’s Annette) and is oddly aloof in general. This character obviously has a story to him that we’re not going to spoil, but even after his background is out in the open, it kind of makes him worse? The only reason he’s up this high is because of his support conversations and his absolute dominance on the battlefield as a Paladin
8 Cyril: The Walking Child Labor Law Citation
Cyril oddly enough does count as Monastary staff, considering he keeps the grounds clean as a way of paying back lady Rhea. Many players might not have noticed Cyril right away considering he dresses and acts like a nameless NPC. But, as the story goes on Cyril does play more of a part, and his dedication to Rhea and not the church as a whole is interesting. Plus he’s honestly a pretty good unit and can be recruited rather early as well. Still weird that he’s so young yet he isn’t considered a student at the school. You’d think Rhea would enroll the child herself, considering their relationship.

7 Tomas: Just A Nice Old Librarian, We Swear
Tomas is one of the least explored staff at the Garreg Mach Monastary, and there’s a story reason for that. Obviously, for those who have played through the full game, there’s a bit more to Tomas than meets the eye. But if we’re judging him just as a faculty member of the school, he’s not half bad. Tomas usually pops up at the perfect time to give our characters some information, and whenever he’s spoken to during exploration periods, he has something interesting to say. But again, no support tree’s, so this is where he stops. We’d love to get to know him more, but there are just too many other characters.
6 Alois: Everyone’s Favorite Uncle
Alois is the uncle character. The loud, boisterous, hokey-jokey character that everyone rolls their eyes at but adores deep down. Honestly, his personality doesn’t seem befitting for a knight of his standing, but that’s what makes him so unique. Plus, he’s technically Byleth’s sibling, since Jeralt raised both of them at different times. As the story goes on we’re able to see more and more of Alois personality, and why he’s such a unique character. Honestly, there’s not much more to say, he felt like family the first time we talked to him, and that doesn’t really change.
5 Jeralt: Our Dream Daddy
Then there’s Jeralt. Our player character’s dad, and the strongest man of all time according to every single NPC we talk to on campus. Basically, Jeralt is the John Wick of the Fire Emblem world. Which honestly, feels a bit weird considering how little we see him fight. But still, his design is just so strong it doesn’t even matter. Whats with every male in this game any their ponytails? Anyway, If Jeralt had a support tree, we’d probably have him at the top of this list, but because he kind of fades into the background as the story goes on, our dear papa can only make it this far.

4 Catherine: Idyllic Knight Until We Got To Know Her
Catherine at first glance seems to be the committed, zealous knight Alois should have been. But, upon further conversation with her, Catherine is actually just as much of an oddball herself. She’s blunt, crass, and honestly kind of rude, and that’s why we love her. She acts more like a stereotypical mercenary more than the actual ones like Shamir and Jeralt do. Plus, she actually can join Byleth’s class absurdly early! Her default class is a Swordmaster, which is an advanced class only unlocked at level 20, meaning she can easily carry the class on her back through the early game.
3 Hanneman: Hyper-Focused Crest Researcher
A lot of the staff at the Mach Monastary tend to be brutish and strong warriors. People like Jeralt, Alois, Cathering, Shamir, heck even Rhea has supernatural strength. So, as far as the magical arts going, Hanneman and Manuela are our best bets. He’s an absolute fiend about Crests and is willing to go to almost ANY length for his research. But, beneath the surface, he’s just an incredibly polite and deeply curious person. The only downside is that Byleth is only able to recruit him after about eight chapters.
2 Shamir: Ex-Merc With A Heart Of Gold
Let’s be honest, much of the reason Fire Emblem is so popular is because half the game is a paring/dating simulator. Every game has all the stereotypical archetypes of both males and females for fans to latch onto, and Shamir is Three Houses cold with a heart of gold character. Shamir is a sniper by default and an ex-mercenary, which is why she respects Byleth from the get-go. She’s able to be recruited around the same time as Catherine and Cyril, as long as Byleth’s level is high enough. And to really sum her up, she’s just great. Fun character, insanely strong Combat Abilities if grabbed early, and an absolute necessity against monsters/mounted units.
1 Manuela: A Walking Disaster That We Love
And finally, we have the queen of them all, Manuela. Sure it might look like we’re picking her because she’s a bit…well, flashy and flirty. But in all honesty, Manuela is just an absolute delight whenever she’s a part of the scene. All of her support conversations are hilarious, she’s relatable as an adult putting up a front of “keeping it together”, and she can’t seem to understand why she’s still single. What’s not to like?! From her appearance alone, one might expect that she’d excel in both faith and reason, but in actuality, she’s a battlemage. Manuela starts as a Priest class when recruited, and has decent ranks in both Sword and Faith, making her perfect to raise into either a Bishop, Gremory, or Mortal Savant.
