Fire At Rio Olympic Village Leads To Evacuation Of Australian Athletes

A tweet from the Australian team’s official account confirmed a “small fire in the basement of the team building” had prompted the evacuation and no one was injured. Firefighters soon cleared the building and allowed the team to re-enter its temporary home.

Australia chef de mission Kitty Chiller had been highly critical of the Olympic village last weekend, listing “blocked toilets and leaking pipes” among a host of problems.

However, within 24 hours Chiller said “fantastic progress” had been made.
