Finau raised eyebrows when he birdied seven of the first eight holes in St. Louis on Friday, but hit the turn in 32 following a triple bogey at the sixth and a dropped shot at the ninth.
Inclement weather meant the 28-year-old had to return on Saturday to complete his second round and he had to settle for a four-under 66, finishing with 10 birdies, a triple bogey and three bogeys.
Finau would have broken the great Player’s record had he birdied the last but instead dropped a shot, although he had already done enough to earn a place in rounds three and four.
Rickie Fowler was just two shots adrift of leader Gary Woodland after signing for a three-under 67.
