The mother tongue of the Al Bhed may seem a little nonsensical to players at first, despite it sharing several similarities with written and spoken English. By finding the 26 hidden Al Bhed Primers that are scattered throughout Final Fantasy X, however, players will eventually be able to make sense of what they are saying and unlock both the Speaking in Tongues and Master Linguist trophies/achievements while they are at it.
Al Bhed Primer vol. I
Location: Al Bhed Salvage Ship

Players will be able to get their hands on the first Al Bhed Primer after they are pulled onboard the Al Bhed salvage ship near the beginning after the game. It’s in the top right hand corner of the vessel, not too far from the save sphere.
- If players fail to pick up the primer while on the salvage ship, they’ll be able to find it later on in the Bikanel desert in an area to the northeast of the Oasis.
Al Bhed Primer vol. II
Location: Besaid Village
Missable: No
Cipher: P -> B
The second Al Bhed primer is located in the Crusader’s tent in Besaid Village. It’s on the floor to the right of the counter, although can be fairly difficult to spot due to the position of one of the nearby NPCs. Although players can return to the village later in the game, there’ll come a point where they’ll need to defeat Dark Valefor in order to do so and so it’s best to pick this one up early if possible.
Al Bhed Primer vol. III
Location: S.S. Liki
Missable: No*
Cipher: L -> C
To find the third Al Bhed Primer, players will need to make their way down to the engine room while onboard the S.S. Liki. It’s on the ground opposite the second large Chocobo wheel and should be fairly easy to spot for most players.
- If players fail to pick up the primer while traveling on the S.S. Liki, they’ll be able to find it later on in the Bikanel desert near the tent where Wakka rejoins the party.
Al Bhed Primer vol. IV
Location: Kilika Port
Missable: No
Cipher: T -> D
Players will be able to pick up the fourth Al Bhed Primer in one of the huts in Kilika Port. It’s sat on the counter just behind Kulukan, the Blitzball player who they’ll see sat on the ground following Sin’s attack.
Al Bhed Primer vol. V
Location: S.S. Winno
Missable: No*
Cipher: A -> E
To find the fifth Al Bhed Primer, players will need to make their way to the bridge while traveling aboard the S.S. Winno. It’s on the floor directly behind the ship’s captain and is fairly difficult to miss.
- If players fail to pick up the primer while onboard the S.S. Winno, they’ll be able to find it later on in the Bikanel desert in a pile of rubble near the spot where they find Kimahri.
Al Bhed Primer vol. VI
Location: Luca Stadium

Cipher: V -> F
The sixth Al Bhed Primer is on the floor in a corridor in Luca Stadium opposite the entrance to the Besaid Aurochs’ locker room. Players should look for the two Kilika Beasts players standing between the windows and will then find the primer behind one of their feet.
Al Bhed Primer vol. VII
Location: Luca Theater

The seventh Al Bhed Primer is on the floor at the bottom of the stairs that lead up to the Sphere Theater in Luca. It can be a little tricky to spot due to the color of the carpet on which it sits, but those who are actively looking for it shouldn’t have too much trouble finding it.
Al Bhed Primer vol. VIII
Location: Mi’ihen Highroad
Missable: No
Cipher: R -> H
To get hold of the eighth Al Bhed Primer, all players need to do is speak with Rin in the travel agency on the Mi’ihen Highroad. This can be done at any time, so it doesn’t matter if players fail to acquire it on their first visit to the area.
Al Bhed Primer vol. IX
Location: Mi’ihen Highroad

Cipher: E -> I
Shortly after leaving Rin’s Travel Agency, players will continue their journey along the Mi’ihen Highroad. When they reach the north section of the Newroad, they’ll find the ninth Al Bhed Primer on the ground on the outside of a bend. It’s not too far from the gray cylindrical object and can be picked up even while riding a Chocobo.
Al Bhed Primer vol. X
Location: Mushroom Rock Road

Upon arriving in the Valley area of the Mushroom Rock Road, players will be able to follow a hidden pathway to gain access to an elevated area. They’ll find the tenth Al Bhed Primer on the ground upon their arrival in this spot.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XI
Location: Djose Highroad
Missable: No
Cipher: G -> K
Players will be able to find the eleventh Al Bhed Primer a little further along the Djose Highroad. It’s easily missed, however, due to it being hidden behind a large rock near the edge of the main path.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XII
Location: Moonflow
Missable: No
Cipher: M -> L
The twelfth Al Bhed Primer is on the North Wharf of the Moonflow near the giant red parasol. Players will be able to pick it up shortly after the party has ridden the Shoopuf to get across the river.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XIII
Location: Guadosalam
Missable: No
Cipher: S -> M
Players will find Al Bhed Primer volume 13 in one of the houses in Guadosalam. It’s on the floor to the left of the giant tree that’s growing through the middle of the structure.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XIV
Location: Thunder Plains
Missable: No*

To obtain the fourteenth Al Bhed Primer, players will need to talk to Rin and tell him that their study of the Al Bhed language is going okay during their first visit to the Thunder Plains travel agency. It’s important to do this before visiting Yuna’s room though.
- If players fail to obtain the primer before visiting Yuna’s room, they’ll be able to find it later on in the Bikanel desert near the spot where Rikku rejoins the party.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XV
Location: Macalania Woods

The fifteenth Al Bhed Primer is on the Lake Road in Macalania Woods near the spot where Auron opens up a new pathway. It’s in the area to the right of the save sphere, not too far from where O’aka XXIII can be found standing.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XVI
Location: Lake Macalania

Players will find the sixteenth Al Bhed Primer shortly after arriving at the travel agency near Lake Macalania. Rather than heading inside though, they should instead look on the ground outside near the giant ice crystal.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XVII
Location: Bikanel Desert

Al Bhed Primer volume 17 can be found in the central area of the Bikanel Desert. There’s a large structure buried in the sand and the primer is lying on the ground in the shadows that it casts.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XVIII
Location: Bikanel Desert

The eighteenth Al Bhed Primer is also in the central area of the Bikanel Desert on the ground near a sign. Players will find it towards the northwestern corner of the area.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XIX

All three of the primers located in and around the Al Bhed Home are missable and so players should make sure to track them down before they leave. The first is located near the entrance to Home by a pile of flaming debris.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XX

Al Bhed Primer volume 20 is on a bed in the living quarters of the Al Bhed Home. Players can access the room from the main hallway that leads through the center of the structure.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXI

To get their hands on the twenty-first Al Bhed Primer, players will need to look around in the most northerly point of the main corridor of the Al Bhed Home. It’s on the ground near a malfunctioning door.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXII

Al Bhed Primer volume 22 can be found on a pathway that leads towards Bevelle Temple. The only time that players will be able to visit this area is immediately after the wedding scene, so players should be sure to pick it up while they’re there to avoid missing out.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXIII

The twenty-third Al Bhed Primer is on the edge of a cliff in the northwest corner of the Calm Lands and can be acquired at any point after first visiting the area.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXIV
Location: Remiem Temple
Missable: No

Al Bhed Primer volume 24 is on the ground in the northwest corner of the central area in Remiem Temple. It can be difficult to spot, although there’s a memory sphere nearby which can make it a lot easier to find.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXV
Location: Cavern of the Stolen Fayth
Missable: No
Cipher: O -> Y
To find the twenty-fifth Al Bhed Primer, players will need to make their way to the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. The primer is on the ground in a dead-end not too far from one of the save spheres.
Al Bhed Primer vol. XXVI
Location: Omega Ruins
Missable: No
Cipher: W -> Z
The final Al Bhed primer is located in the Omega Ruins. Players should make their way to the cave with the four chests in the center and then look on the ground near one of the blue torches that line the back wall.
