Square Enix announced the addition of the free-to-play version of the game in a recent Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered trailer detailing the game’s new features. Given that there is a premium full version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered, the free-to-play version understandably comes with some rather heavy limitations. That said, it’s a surprisingly robust alternative to the full game and might save some people some money overall.

To start, the Final Fantasy free-to-play version of the game makes the first three dungeons of the game entirely free and accessible. Those who download the free-to-play version will be able to group up and play with others using the free-to-play version, as well. Further, this free-to-play version allows for cross-play between all supported platforms. That includes PS4, Switch, and both iOS and Android devices.
In addition to the first three dungeons being available to all free players, there’s also a way for free players to access 10 more. All it requires is for free players to connect to the game of someone who has bought the full version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered.
One issue to consider is that it’s unclear if Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered will feature any sort of matchmaking system. How players will connect with others at all, let alone across platforms, hasn’t been announced. It seems likely that it will be limited to players who are already acquainted, as opposed to a robust friends or matchmaking system, though. Keep that in mind before diving in.
Expect more information about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered, its 4-player co-op, and its new online functionality in the weeks ahead. There’s still plenty of time left for Square Enix to detail the inner workings of the updated game. Worst case, players can now try out the free-to-play version and decide for themselves whether the game’s worth investing in.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered releases August 27 on PS4, Switch, and iOS and Android devices.
