RELATED: War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Will Be Getting Persona 5 Royal Crossover

The new Celestial Machinery crossover event has started February 10 and will last until February 23, allowing the players to summon characters Neo Vision Grahf and Neo Vision Id, in addition to free unit Fei and a free daily summon; moreover, a free weekly 10+1 summon will be available to everyone between February 10 and April 22. Dedicated players will note that this isn’t the first iteration of such an occurrence: a similar crossover happened in 2019, when the unlockables were Bart, Billy, Chu-Chu, Citan, Fei, Elly, Emeralda, Maria, and Rico.

The free-to-play title has featured a long and varied list of crossovers, including many featuring other blockbuster Square Enix titles such as Octopath Traveler and Kingdom Hearts. While collaborations with other franchises are typical of this genre of games, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius went so far as including pop music sensation Ariana Grande in the game in 2017.

Like many other successful free-to-play mobile games, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius has adopted the gacha model: a system in which players can unlock new characters, weapons or skins by pulling from a banner, investing game coins in a more or less randomly generated outcome, typically reflected in its rarity by a star rating. This very model allows the easy integration of crossover events in the games, which do much to increase longevity and keep content fresh.

The gacha mechanics, often subjects of criticism for their similarities to gambling, have nevertheless proved exceptionally popular in recent times, with games like Genshin Impact rising to critical acclaim. The contrast cannot be greater with Xenogears itself, a game from another era with a veritable cult following, and a JRPG that desperately needs a reboot: a title from a time when the very idea of free-to-play games with microtransactions would have been difficult to even imagine.
