Considered by many to be one of the best SNES RPGs of all time, the plot of Final Fantasy 6 revolves around an ensemble cast of characters as they deal with the threat of a tyrannical empire, and the apocalyptic fallout after their world plunges into chaos and ruin. Players could take up to four of the game’s 14 playable characters into battle, and witness their respective journeys through the story. Yet, it is the main antagonist and final boss of Final Fantasy 6 that stands out the most, as seen by the artist’s rendition.

A Redditor named Duckock needlepointed their depiction of Final Fantasy 6’s final boss, Kefka, against a team of four party members. The process of needlepointing involves yarn stitching through a stiff, open-weave canvas of various sizes and shapes. As it is one of the oldest forms of canvas artwork, needlepoint art is commonly used to decorate ornaments, upholstery, or go up as a wall hanging. While it isn’t clear how long it took Duckock to stitch and finish his canvas, the art depicts how the final battle happened in the original SNES game. The post’s title, “u dancing mad bro?” is a reference to Kefka’s well-known battle theme, “Dancing Mad,” composed by Final Fantasy series legend Nobuo Uematsu.

In the battle scene, Kefka shows how unhinged he truly is, as he sheds his clown-like visage to become the game’s God of Magic. As he descends into the fray, Kefka assumes the form of a fallen angel as he grins maniacally at his adversaries. Standing against him are from top to bottom, Setzer, Terra, Celes, and Edgar, each prepared to attack Kefka as the end draws near. After Kefka is defeated, the player is treated to a sequence of scenes and credits lasting over 20 minutes long.

Though fan art of Kefka has been done before, a needlepoint depiction of his final stand is one of the more unique crafts to date. The handiwork shows why both Kefka and Final Fantasy 6 as a whole remain so endearing in the hearts of fans even after nearly three decades.
